“In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success.”
– Proverbs 3:6

This verse from Proverbs captures how people are expected to live. As a Christian, you have always been foretold to live with Him and put God first above anything else.

Such a sentiment could have easily become a Christian cliché, given how people are constantly reminded about it. However, given how chaotic life can become, given the many things clamoring for people’s attention—jobs, families, hobbies, passions—matters that demand their attention, everyone needs to be careful not to be led astray.

Survival can bring out the best and worst in people. In one snap, they can easily prioritize themselves and leave their moralities behind.

This isn’t what’s expected of humanity. One way to avoid falling victim to this is by prioritizing your relationship with God.

What Does It Mean to Put God First?

Some things are easier said than done, and this is one of those. After all, even its meaning can be hard to understand. What does “Put God First” even mean?

“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
– Matthew 6:33 NIV

There’s no better way to answer this than by following the principle in Matthew 6:33. To put God first, you are expected to live in His image, to do nothing that will upset Him, and to put your relationship with Him at risk. Putting God first means you must serve Him throughout your life with everything you have—living by abiding by His rules and following His commandments.

Overall, you are to put Him first by allowing His love to overflow your life so that you can give and share it with others. This is the fundamental principle in every Christian life, something that’s naturally expected of them, given that they’re His children built from His image. Now that you have an idea of what it means to put God first let’s answer the question this leads to:

How Do I Make God My First Priority?

Author Bonita McAfee Mitchell has always prided herself on being a woman of God, and it shows in the way she carries herself and the materials she writes. She has put God and her faith first and is reaping its benefits. Hence, she has become a writer whose primary message is to hearten people to strengthen their trust and allow Him back in their lives.

Like her, she wants people to find their purpose through God.

“Anything is possible when Jesus is first.” This has always been her principle in life, the belief that has brought her where she is today. It’s the core message of her book The First Lady, which she hopes people should also abide by. But how does she do it? How does she put God first?

It’s not going to be easy, especially with the countless distractions you encounter daily. But through these simple steps, you can follow His will and obey His commandments.

Seek God First, Start Your Day Praying

There’s no better way to put God first than by starting everyday communicating with Him. Start your day by seeking His presence. Thank Him for giving you another day. Ask Him to guide you throughout your activities. Your prayer can be anything you wish to tell Him; the important thing is that you start your day right by seeking God.

Block Out Distractions, Choose to Hear Him

In the modern world, it can be complicated to understand His words and live by His message. People are constantly busy, juggling multiple things every day, so it becomes easy to set religion aside. Let’s face it: you may even be guilty of prioritizing other tasks over activities centered around your faith.

It is challenging to manage many things at once. But this shouldn’t make it easy to abandon religion. You can incorporate it into your routines, no matter how busy these can be. One way to do this is by maximizing what technology and modernity offer: listen to Christian podcasts. Multiple channels help you put God first, where they talk about faith and help you deepen your understanding of His word.

Here’s one example:

Modernity shouldn’t be a hindrance to your faith. It can be a tool for it.

Live Like Him, Spread Love Like Him

God has constantly reminded His people to love one another. Hence, another way to put God first and live in His image is by doing just as He’s said. It’s easy to drown in responsibilities that you end up forgetting to show the people around you how much you care. With how challenging life can be, it’s easy to forget love. But remember, God wants you to love one another. Hence, take your time to pause and show someone a little kindness today.

Be Reminded About Him, Read A Story About Him

The Bible follows His story. But another way to put God first is by reading what people say about Him, materials that talk about their lives when they met Him.

This way, you’re easily inspired to live similarly, being exposed to the numerous benefits a lifestyle as such offers. There are many wonderful Christian books to explore—one of which is Bonita Mitchell’s The First Lady.

These materials help find your purpose and guide you to the direction God wants you to be in.

One’s Testimony Reflecting Everyone’s Stories

The First Lady is the perfect example of an individual’s story conveying the right virtues and becoming resonant with anyone reading it. Not everyone may be as faithful and close to the Lord as Bonita is, but her story is something almost anyone has experienced or sees themselves experiencing, so it becomes easy to relate to and understand her point.

According to her readers, The First Lady is the perfect book for when they feel they are at their lowest point in life.

“If you are struggling with life, childhood, relationships, and/or marital issues you will feel “set free” after reading… Your testimony revealed the faith you had in God from being a little girl growing up in a family who always looked to God despite any adversities.” – Sherri Antoinette on The First Lady
